As I understand it perl is also free. It is certainly a negative
to require its installation into UNIX prior to building EPICS.
Nevertheless, we are considering it because we end up installing
far less on other OS such as windows{NT,95} if perl is used
to replace shell scripts (and use of awk, sed, grep, pwd, ...}.
