I would still consider myself a UNIX user,
just not blind to portablility ;-)

One could replace most of grep & Co by Perl scripts.
In fact you don't even have to for WIN32,
because we found some grep, awk, sed, ...
to make EPICS compile there.
But why not look for a single, common tool?
I don't see any reason for writing UNIX-only scripts,
making porting to WIN32, VMS etc. as painful as possible
while we are given a way to avoid this.
Whenever someone intends to write a new script
which is essential to EPICS/base, the makesystem, ...
he/she should try to make it portable
and right now I would suggest Perl for that task.
