LEX and YACC are for sure good tools for implementing a generic format parser.
They do not, however, solve the fundamental problem that we do not
have such a generic format...

Maybe. At first we needed to
* compare the existing formats and
find tagnames for the common features,
* decide, if booleans
should we written as 0/1 or t/f or TRUE/FALSE or yes/no or ...,
* choose a format for writing/reading colours etc.,
* foreach (property) { the_same_as_above }
* aggree about tagnames for the special features of each dm
* do what I forgot to list here
Given that implementing a LEX/YACC parser which could be used
as a start in all DMs sounds reasonable.
