PROFESSIONAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEER
ELECTRONICS AND INSTRUMENTATION SYSTEMS

A vacancy exists in the Electronics Section of the Technology
Division of the Royal Greenwich Observatory (RGO) in Cambridge,
for a Professional Electronic Engineer. The post will involve
electronic, electro-mechanical and low-level software design and
development for telescopes and their instrumentation, working
alone and in multi-disciplinary project teams to enhance existing
telescopes and instrumentation and develop new ones.
Technology Division has responsibility for the development of
advanced telescope, instrument and detector systems for
observatories on La Palma in the Canary Islands, and on Hawaii.
The Division is also engaged in designing and constructing systems
for the new 8 metre Gemini telescopes on Hawaii and in Chile, and
is developing a new 2 metre telescope for La Palma.
DUTIES:
* Designing and developing electronic systems for telescope and
instrument control, using up-to-date analogue and digital design
techniques including simulation, prototyping and evaluation as
necessary; subsequent testing and commissioning of these systems,
both locally and at the overseas sites
* Specifying and developing enhancements or replacements for
existing systems, and analysing problems with a view to providing
effective solutions
* Management of both electronic and multi - disciplinary projects
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Applicants should be capable of leading work of an investigative
nature at Professional Engineer level. Good communications skills
and proven project management experience are required.
Applicants should have either a relevant degree and two years
experience, or an HNC plus 4 Years experience in two of the
following:
* Design and development of digital electronics
* Microprocessor systems design, interfacing and communications
(preferably VMEbus).
* Design and development of analog electronics, preferably with
some low-noise/high interference rejection experience.
* Simulation, analysis and design of complete electronics/electro-
mechanical systems.
* Programming microprocessor systems using a real-time operating
system (preferably VxWorks) in C or a similar structured high-
level language.
The salary will be in the Band 4 range of 13,411 UK pounds pa to
23,697 UK pounds pa, depending on age and qualifications.
