There have been a number of bugs fixed both in the gdd library
and the ca server lib since beta1. Unfortunately, many of these 
bug fixes have only recently been checked in (and therefore are 
not in epics_R3_13_0_beta4).

As I recall there were some real obvious problems with the first
released version that was in beta1. The problems fixed recently
have been more subtle. 

The current version does _not_ byte swap the data correctly on
little endian machines. 

If upgrading to beta5 does not fix your problem then please
send a detailed description of the situation and we will take 
a look.
