I have completed my latest round of work on the APS logDaemon
(a simple distributed message logging system).
We have been using it successfully for logging from workstations
for about 9 months. Note that it is a single threaded UDP based
server, and that no message throttling is provided. It supports
a simple ascii file format as well as (optionally) SDDS.
The web page document is updated, and the source code is also
available for ftp from the web page. See:
http://www.aps.anl.gov/asd/oag/oagSoftware.html
Note that the extracted tar file creates a directory structure
almost identical to that of epics/extensions. You should be
able to simply "cd oag/apps/src/logDaemon" and then "gnumake".
I do depend on the directory /usr/local/epics/R3.12.1.2, but
you can change that in oag/config. I think I only use the
linked list library in epics/base, so any version of epics
will suffice.
If you just type "gnumake", it will create a logDaemon
which writes simple text files. To use the SDDS file format,
you will need a recent copy of epics/extensions. Given that,
you can type "gnumake USE_SDDS=1". Note that introducing
a new file format for the output is fairly easy, so if
you have a favorite library for writing files...
This logger has proven more than adequate for many of our
needs, however I do recommend looking seriously at the
TJNAL (CEBAF) logger when it comes out in a few months.
The design goals of the CEBAF logger are considerably more
lofty than mine :)
