Job Description:
The Bates Linear Accelerator Center is seeking a Software Engineer or Software
Programmer to make a major contribution to the conversion of the Bates Control
System to use the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System, EPICS.
The primary responsibilities include writing controls software for a Real Time
Control System and implementing existing software modules which are included
in EPICS. The control system uses PC's running DOS, LINUX, Windows 95 or NT,
Motorola VME processors running VxWorks or UNIX to control and monitor the
accelerator hardware and UNIX workstations for the User interface.
Responsibilities will include writing device drivers, interrupt service
routines, device support modules, and other custom code to run under the EPICS
core software. Integration of the control system database into a real time
object oriented database will also be required. The programmer will be working
with other controls engineers, programmers and Accelerator Physicists in the
design, debugging and operational phases of implementation. Being on call and
occasional shift work should be expected.
Qualifications:
Minimum of a BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or other
related discipline and 5 years experience working in a real time controls
environment. Expertise in C and UNIX and a working knowledge of real time
operating systems, C++ and Object Oriented systems are required. Familiarity
with X-Windows, Motif, graphical user interfaces, VxWorks, Windows NT, LINUX
are desirable. Knowledge of standard hardware interface protocols such as
IEEE 488.2, RS232, and CAMAC are also highly desirable. The individual for
this position must have good written and verbal communications skills, be
able to work independently with a minimal amount of supervision, and as a team
member in the EE Group.
