ANNOUNCING!!!!

New EPICS Documentation Web Pages (Pre-Alpha-Release)
-----------------------------------------------------

I have implemented a new set of WWW pages to make EPICS
documentation more accessible and manageable. Please take a
minute and try them out for me, and let me know what you think.

http://www.aps.anl.gov/asd/controls/epics/EpicsDocumentation/WWWPages/EpicsFrames.html

Sorry the path is so long, but once it is official, it will
be moved up to the top level of the directory structure.

The pages will work best when viewed with a Netscape2.0-compatible
browser, as I am extensively using the Netscape 'frames'
capabilities.

A couple hints for using Netscape's frames feature:
- The 'BACK' button will not work like you expect it to. It will
not return you to the previous contents of the screen, it will
take you back to the page you were at before you came to the
  EPICS documentation page.
- To return to the previous contents of a frame, click and hold
the right mouse button. A pop-up menu will appear with
  Forward-in-Frame/Back-in-Frame options.
- If a frame is too big/small put the mouse pointer on the line
between the frames, click and hold middle mouse button and
  resize frame as desired.

Also, I need you to consider several questions:

1) APS is willing to be the repository of all EPICS and
EPICS-related documentation. The reasoning for this is to
have one place where people can go for all their EPICS
   documentation needs.
Question: If you are a non-APS person and authoring EPICS
documents, should APS provide a link to your document at
your home-site, or should APS maintain a copy of the
document here? If links are your choice, are you going
to be able to guarantee the stability of the link (no
         moving directories around, etc.)?

2) When APS has accumulated all the EPICS documents and
established a stable documentation system, should the site be
mirrored in Europe? If so, where? Any volunteers? Anybody
   know how to do this?

3) In what format(s) should the EPICS documents be available:
   Hypertext, Postscript, Zipped-Postscript, A4-Postscript?

4) What about old versions of a document... should they be kept
in the list of active documents? Or, should they be moved off
to an 'attic' area? If moved to the attic, would the attic
have to be web-accessible (which involves maintaining two
document structures instead of just one)?

5) Who do I have to tell when I re-arrange the document world
   here on 'www.aps.anl.gov'?

Part of this process is going to involve cleaning out all
the old stuff that is sitting around and straightening out
the spaghetti-like directory structure. If you are using
something here, linked to something here, or just want to
make sure your something doesn't get deleted, let me know.

6) How many of you are _not_ using a Netscape2.0-compatible
   browser?

All questions, comments, suggestions welcome.
