                           EPICS Evaluation at CERN

Following the information received at the ICALEPCS'95 conference,
the controls group of
the CERN ECP division, as well as members of the ATLAS and CMS
experiments, are planning
to carry out an evaluation of EPICS with a view to its possible use
for LHC. We have
generously been offered help by Matthias Clausen of DESY, but, we
shall no doubt
generate lots of questions for the rest of the community too...

As ever, the current problem is to find manpower. However, the plan
is to re-implement
some fraction of the controls for an existing CERN project to
understand the advantages
and possible limitations of the system. We are aiming to have
enough information by the
autumn (we don't fall in Europe) in order to decide whether or not
to continue or to go
for a commercial package.

Of course, we shall be only too pleased to hear from people who
have an opinion on
whether or not EPICS would be suitable for LHC experiments on a
time scale of at least
15 years.

Now to the first question.

Clearly, an advantage of EPICS is that one should be able to pick
up existing drivers.
However, the only list we have found is one produced Karen Coulter
on 12/1/93. This does
not include a single piece of equipment used by the control systems
for which I am
responsible, which is perhaps not an auspicious start. However, the
document is 3 years
out of date (depends on whether it is the from December 1st or
January 12th :-) ).

Is there an up-to-date list somewhere?

Regards, David M.
