No. Thomas Birke's method excepted, you can't build edd/dm under X11R6.  I 
recommend getting hold of edd2/dm2 from LANL - it's much better, although you have 
to convert any old edd/dm screens you might have.

I know.  I wonder how many other people besides ourselves have spent HOURS trying 
this (it doesn't work reliably after you've done it all either), just because 
edd2/dm2 isn't in the standard EPICS extensions distribution?

This is one reason why I think the extensions tree should be unbundled.
