For anyone who doesn't want to use the CDI, I wrote an EPICS CANbus driver which is 
already in use on UKIRT (and will be used by Gemini).  This drives the TIP810 IP 
module and has been tested using the Greenspring VIPC310 and VIPC610 carrier boards 
but also has software to drive the mv162 (not tested).  Device support is provided 
for ai, ao, bi, bo, mbbi, mbbo, mbbiDirect and mbboDirect records with full I/O 
interrupt and asynchronous record processing.  You can even use EPICS to build a 
simulator for another CANbus device to respond to RTRs on the bus.

Documentation is in preparation, and should be available shortly.
