Re the above, I had one response from Andrew Johnson citing unexplained
problems with gcc under Solaris. Are there any other Solaris gcc attempters?

What about Linux? Presumably gcc is always used there? Is the lesson that
for system code like EPICS we are best off sticking with the compiler that
compiled the operating system? [is acc used to build SunOS / Solaris?]
