Dear all,

One could change CONFIG_SITE to reference a file called (say)
EPICS_HOST_ARCH from some file-system which is physically on the build
machine. That way you get the host architecture appropriate to the
machine on which you type "gmake". One way of doing this is to have a
/unique link on all machines; files in there are guaranteed not to be
shared between machines. $EPICS/config/HOST_ARCH could then be linked to
/unique/EPICS_HOST_ARCH and will be unique. We have used this trick on
occasion for things like making different machines see different license
files where we want the actual file name to be the same on all
machines.

A suppose a simpler approach would be simply to include the host name
in the file referenced to define the host architecture.

Alternatively, one can presumably usually deduce the host machine
architecture from things like /etc/motd, in which case the HOST_ARCH
assignment could be replaced with a call to such a script in
base/tools.

  William
