The Structural Biology CAT at the APS has a large CCD detector system which
will have a burst transfer rate of 10 MB/sec and a sustained rate nearly that
high. They have designed their data storage and visualization system around
ATM. We heard a talk on this just today, and the problem they have found with
ATM now is that there is not yet multivendor interoperability. They are
buying all of their ATM hardware from a single vendor (FORE) to assure that it
will all work together.

We are have just begun using FDDI for our high speed networking, but don't
have enough experience to comment on performance yet.
