There is now another email exploder for discussing the new device oriented
API for EPICS (presented at the last collaboration meeting).  If you have
not heard about this, it is a layer on top of channel access (or any
other control system) which controls a system by device name and message,
not by record and field.  It has much in common with the device library
(C. Saunders et al) at APS, with many additional features.

The API is currently being defined, with prototype implementations planed
for 3 months from now.  All comments are welcome!

To join, send mail commands to [email protected] with the following
body:

HELP			--this will return help on the server
LISTS			--this will return the names of all supported lists
SUBSCRIBE epics-devapi	--this will add you to the new device API list

The server also supports file retrieval, but nothing is there yet.

The text of the paper presented is being updated to reflect suggestions
and discussions which took place Friday.  I'll post a notice of availability
to tech-talk and epics-devapi in a day or so.  Technical discussions of the API
will take place on [email protected].  I'll also post a plain text copy
of the paper to epics-devapi.

P.S. For those of you who have attempted to join the list, I misspelled the
list server's name, it is "mailserv" not "mailserve".  Sorry for the confusion.
