I am speaking slightly out of turn above: I know Marty Kraimer at APS wants
to use Solaris 2.4 for client side to utilize Sparc-1000 or -2000 hardware.
Thus he is awaiting the completion of R3.12 before he begins. As far as
I know, neither LBL, CEBAF, nor LANL has any *COMPELLING* reason to push
for Solaris 2.X. Since APS does, they undoubtedly will finish first. So
their latest date is your most conservative date.
The current release 3.12 team is working hard to make adjustments to new
hosts as easy as possible. This will deal with "make", "cc" and so forth.
However, only the IOC core and SUPPORTED clients are sure bets. There are
many UNSUPPORTED clients and utilities now that have never been checked
for portability. The good news is that most of these are at APS--so likely
they too will be verified for Solaris.
Brief checks at LBL have shown that many Unix clients and utilities run
correctly under the binary compatibility mode, so if you have access to
one or more SunOS machines you can bridge the gap for awhile.
My apologies to Marty Kraimer and the rest of the APS crew for putting
works in (or taking them out of) their mouths.
