Chapter 7 Controllers

7. File Selection Objects

The filename selection menu was implemented to allow a user write the filename of a file including its full pathname to a Stringout record, though it could be used to write a file name to any string-type field. When the user clicks on a filename selection menu in DM, the filename selection popup window appears. By selecting a file and clicking on Open, a string of the file's name including its path name is sent to the channel.

The default directory and the filter can be configured in EDD. A filter is simply a character pattern that utilizes the wildcard character '*', so that only names matching the pattern are displayed. For instance, the pattern *.txt will exclude all files whose last four characters are not .txt from the selection pattern. Of course, at run-time the user can change the filter and the directory in the popup window. To specify a default directory, enter the path of the directory in the 'path name' property. To specify a selection pattern, enter the pattern into the 'selection pattern' property.

Figure 7-10 shows the property sheet of a filename selection object.
