BTW, in the current state of the build system, if one changes "EPICS_HOST_ARCH=linux-x86" to "EPICS_HOST_ARCH=linux-586" the build fails like this.

~/lp/epicsR3.15-atomics/src/libCom$ gmake rebuild
../../configure/CONFIG:55: ../../configure/os/CONFIG.linux-586.Common: No such file or directory
gmake: *** No rule to make target `../../configure/os/CONFIG.linux-586.Common'. Stop.

So it appears that at this time we don't yet have all of the necessary infrastructure in place for users to choose a specific x86 host architecture when only changing EPICS_HOST_ARCH. Janet: hopefully I am wrong about this and there is an easy solution.

Presumably, users could add "-march=i586" to CONFIG_SITE.Common.linux-x86. Maybe that is where we could default to "-march=i586" and a user who happens to still be using 486 or 386 linux workstation could easily comment out that line?

Nevertheless, this issue of defaulting the lowest common denominator x86 CPU architecture to something other than 386 is actually completely orthogonal to the source code changes in the branch and I happy to remove it altogether, and will remove it if it is seen as any type of impediment to merging the changes.
