I know that it's not always an option, but nevertheless wanted to 
mention that for most scripting languages (as well as most functional 
languages too) there are many XML support libraries, covering a wide 
range from simple&easy to complex&powerful (a CPAN search for XML lists 
3668 entries!).

I haven't worked with XML libs in Perl yet, but I bet my <deleted> it's 
a lot easier than anything ever written for C++ or Java. (Note, for 
instance, that Perl has native closures, so callbacks are just plain 
fun to use, instead of being a PITA.)
