A new concept for quantitative nanoscale imaging with magnetic contrast
The combination of polarized synchrotron x-rays with scanning tunneling microscopy provides a promising new path toward the imaging of nanoscale structures with magnetic contrast. While a scanning probe provides the high spatial resolution measuring x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) allows in principle the direct quantification of magnetic moments. This capability has the potential to broaden and deepen the general understanding of nanomagnetism. The feasibility of obtaining XMCD spectra by a scanning probe tip in close proximity to a magnetic structure has been demonstrated.
