Partner User Proposal Abstract
Establishing a high-magnetic field capability at the APS (PUP-43)
We propose to set-up, test and use a 13 Tesla superconducting magnet sample environment at the hard x-ray branch of Sector 4. The ability to perform experiments in such high magnetic fields should open the door to new investigations in condensed matter physics and materials science. Currently, there is no such capability at the APS. The hard x-ray branch of Sector 4 is a natural choice for testing the high field magnet because the beamline is designed to provide high-brilliance linearly or circularly polarized synchrotron radiation. We have designed this high-field sample environment to be compatible with the physical constraints of the 4-ID-D station. This high-field magnet greatly expands the sample environment capabilities at the APS and meets the needs of a growing user community. Developing the ability to perform experiments in fields above 10 T at the APS was recommended at the Nanomagnetism Workshop held as a part of the APS Strategic Planning in Fontana, WI from Aug. 29 – Sep.2, 2004.
