Partner User Proposal Abstract
Short-Range Order in Solution: Development of a Dedicated Beam Line for Pair-Distribution Function (PDF) Studies at APS (PUP-42)
The purpose of this partner-user proposal is to develop a beam line dedicated to pair-distribution function (PDF) studies at APS Sector 11-ID-B. The development of this capability involves the organization of hardware and expertise that already exists either within the partnering group or by the APS staff. This proposal is meant to serve as an infrastructure to bring these existing components together to create a new dedicated capability at the APS. In addition, this proposal includes the development of a scientific program that addresses problems of long-standing interest to solution chemists studying dissolved heavy-metal ions. These studies will be meant to serve as demonstrative experiments for the purpose of building a new user community. The infrastructure of the Actinide Facility will be used to interest users in these results and to reach out to solution chemists who are not currently taking advantage of the APS. Whereas studies relevant to solution chemistry are the central focus of the scientific direction of this PUP, the community involved in scattering studies in condensed-matter amorphous and glass phases would also benefit from a dedicating high-energy X-ray scattering beam line in the U.S.; a capability that does not currently exist.
