Partner User Proposal Abstract
Ultrafast X-ray Science: A Partner User Proposals for Establishing a User-base for Time-resolved Science at Mhatt-CAT, Sector 7 (PUP-20)
We propose a partnership between the Advanced Photon Source (APS), MHATT-CAT, and the FOCUS Physics Frontier Center for the advancement of Ultrafast X-ray Science at Argonne National Laboratory. In particular, the partnership seeks to build a new ultrafast user-base over the next three years through education, active recruitment and strong collaboration with the international ultrafast optics community in time-resolved x-ray science. This program will allocate 20% of the beamtime on 7-ID for this purpose. As the sole U.S. member of the XTRA international consortium of femtosecond science, FOCUS has access to world class researchers from abroad, and the proposed partnership provides a unique opportunity to act as a conduit to bring some of these outstanding scientists to the APS. It is expected that scientists brought in through collaboration under this Partner User Proposal will make the transition to the General User Program within a few visits. MHATT-CAT and the University of Michigan are strongly dedicated to promoting ultrafast science at synchrotrons. This proposal is based on the recommendations of the Ultrafast Science Workshop that we sponsored at Argonne Labs on June 4-5, 2002.
