Argonne Scattering, Imaging, and Spectroscopy Institute preview

Agenda


Can we interpret x-ray scattering data on systems far from equilibrium? How can we combine different spectroscopic probes to determine contributions to the superconducting condensation energy? How do complex phenomena emerge from the simplest ingredients? Can we extend the frontiers of measurement and prediction? To answer these types of grand challenge science questions it is necessary to expand the role of theory and computer simulation in understanding measurements from state-of-the-art instrumentation at major x-ray, neutron, and electron scattering facilities. Probing the structure and dynamics over a broad range of length and time scales using multiple techniques can provide a much deeper understanding of materials properties and behavior than a single probe, but how is this data best combined and simultaneously used? The proposed Argonne Scattering and Imaging Institute is designed to provide the theoretical, algorithmic and software needs for maximizing the effective use of scattering and imaging data, creating valuable resources for the entire scientific community.
