January 20, 2006 Dear Sector 7 users, The APS has changed the policy regarding the access to user machine shops. From this point on, only people that have passed both a written and practical test, as administered by the APS, will have access to the machine shop. This access will be enforced by having a card reader on the door to the machine shop on Feb. 1st, 2006. Past users that are used to machining will have to plan accordingly. Users can theoretically get the needed training, but the practical is to be offered at infrequent intervals, thus making training hard to get in a short time period (such as during a beamtime). While certain staff will have access to the user shop, we will not spend much time making parts, as we are not machinists. The APS machine shop is available for making parts, but requires an ANL spending account. Of course, the machine shops at your home institutions are available for use before coming to the APS.
