Patterned “antidot” magnetic multilayers, i.e., hole arrays in continuous films
(inset), are attractive for high density data storage. Fe K edge XMCD hysteresis loops (circles) taken on
a Gd/Fe multilayer antidot array are shown. XMCD measures the projection of the magnetization along the photon
direction so vectorial information is obtained by rotating the sample/magnet assembly with respect to
the incident photon beam direction. Micromagnetic simulations (solid lines) yield insight into the microscopic
magnetization configurations [Applied Physics Letters 81, 4997 (2002)]
