Large tensile device, shown for compression measurements on wet boneSector 1 Deformation Rig 2

  • Maximum applied load = 2000 lb-force
  • Loading is displacement controlled through:
    • worm gear screw jack (Joyce/Dayton Co, WJ 201T)
    • 20:1 gear reducer (Huber 2015)
    • remotely-controlled stepper motor (Vexta 2phase, 3 Amp)
  • Displacement resolution (with gear reducer, full step mode) = 0.0635 microns/step
  • Compressive, bending and tensile modes possible.
  • Load is measured with a load cell:
    • mounted below the sample
    • 200-500-1000-2000-3000 lb-rated cells are available
    • Omega LCF series
  • Strain is measured independently using either a strain gage or a clip-on extensometer
  • Device can be mounted to stages below using 4 through-holes.
  • Maximum sample rotation without blind spots ~140 degrees.
  • The interior space is large enough to accomodate the sector1 IR furnace for thermo-mechanical loading.
  • Device was designed by Mark Erdmann of the APS.
