  • The Dunand group at Northwestern University is conducting strain measurements in composites to elucidate the issue of load transfer between phases.  Composites studied to date at Sector 1 include: aluminum/alumina, aluminum/mullite, Mg/MgB2 and high-carbon steels.  Typical experiments consist of static loading of the composite and recording of diffraction rings from which the strains of each phase is determined.  Modeling of the load-transfer effects (elastic, plastic, damage) is by continuum mechanics or finite-element modeling.
  • Dr. Xun-Li Wang's scientific interests include mechanical properties, phase transformation, and magnetism in advanced materials. His group has carried out experiments using 1-ID on deformation behaviors in nanostructured materials and nanocrystallization in bulk metallic glass.
