Workshop on Membrane Science
August 17-18, 2004, APS, Argonne, Illinois
Objective
- Identify opportunities for continued scientific discovery and impact using
the Advanced Photon Source during the next 5-10 years in the inter-disciplinary
area of membrane sciences.
- Explore the breadth of science covered by the
workshop topics, not limiting
to synchrotron techniques alone.
- Assure that enough time is given to discuss
how the existing community can be grown, and which newer areas of membrane
science are to be identified that will broaden the community. This is
to be achieved by bringing scientific leaders to the workshops that will
both identify key problems in their research and benefit from the addition
of synchrotron techniques in their research arsenal.
- Identify a few dozen
new scientific programs which the participants could bring to the APS during
next 5-10 years, on the basis of the contributed abstracts. Also evaluate
the capital and operational requirements for these programs to succeed.
- Examine existing beamline capabilities at the APS and define what future
beamline capabilities would be desirable to pursue new research in membrane
sciences.
- Prepare a summary document for the archival literature to serve as a roadmap for the future of the emerging areas in membrane science utilizing the capabilities of the Advanced Photon Source.
