APS TECHNICAL UPDATE - No. 26

Subject: TB-7 erratum no. 2, bending magnet white beam transport requirement

P. K. Job, AOD Radiation Physicist has provided the following correction to the Guide to Beamline Radiation Shielding Design at the Advanced Photon Source, ANL/APS/TB-7, by Ipe et al. The new specification for bending magnet white beam transport shielding calls for 9 mm of lead for air scatter only (the old specification called for 6 mm).

The third paragraph of Section 4.3.1 in ANL/APS/TB-7 should read:

For the bending magnet, 9 mm of lead is needed for air and 11 mm for solid scatters for synchrotron radiation only. A calculation should be made (by the user) to determine if the secondary bremsstrahlung scattering is a problem for the solid scatterer.
