Hazardous Materials
Hazardous materials are those mateials that are considered to be hazardous by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), Argonne National Laboratory, and the U. S. Department of Energy. Consult your CAT Safety Coordinator or the AOD ES&H Coordinator if you are not sure whether the material in question is in this category. Shipments of small quantities of some materials may qualify for an exemption from DOT requirements. Your home institution or CAT can help you determine whether your shipment qualifies. The application of the DOT Small Quantity Exception to Hazardous Material Transport by APS Users on the ANL Site is explained in the APS Technical Update 23 (TUD-23). For information about air shipments of cryopreserved biological samples in dry-shippers please refer to APS Technical Update 25 (TUD-25).
NOTE: Any material that is radioactive, including naturally occurring radioactive compounds, may not be brought or shipped to the APS without prior approval of the APS. Please contact your CAT representative or Bruce Glagola for details.
