Experiment Hazard Class 12 – Electrical and Electronic Equipment


This hazard classification applies to all experiments involving electrical and electronic equipment. Other hazard classifications and their associated hazard controls may also apply to experiments in this hazard class. The inspection of electric equipment is covered under the APS Policy For User Electric Equipment Inspections.

Electrical hazards does not include work involving equipment where ALL of the following apply: (1) equipment use only in accordance with operating instructions AND/OR involves just plugging/unplugging, AND; (2) The equipment is either NRTL-listed or displays an Argonne barcoded ELECTRICAL SAFETY APPROVED sticker, AND; (3) The work involves no attempts to remove covers or panels that might expose energized electrical components.

NOTE: Unless required Argonne training has been completed, users are not authorized to perform electrical work.

Experiment Category

All Hazard Class 12 experiments are categorized as medium risk experiments and require inspection and review by APS Designated Electrical Equipment Inspectors. Please read the details of these inspections.

Training – Follow the guidance provided in the APS User Safety Update (February 16, 2005) and APS User Safety Update (April 12, 2006).

ESH377 - Electrical Safety Awareness is required for all employees and users regardless of job function.

ESH371 - Electrical Safety Training – General (web based training) is required before any work on electrical equipment can be performed. Such work includes inserting and removing cards from computer internals, cutting and splicing wires, soldering wire connections and components, terminating cables, and other activities where good electrical safety practices are necessary. Users must have completed this course to be considered "qualified" by Argonne to perform electrical work. Additional details and clarifications will be provided at a later date.

Work at < 50 V requires ESH377, ESH371, and ESH114

Work at > 50 V requires ESH377, ESH371, ESH375, and ESH114.

Experiment Authorization

Unless otherwise noted in the approved experiment safety plan, the Director of the APS Engineering Support Division delegates the authority to authorize an experiment in this hazard class to a member of the AES Experiment Safety Review Board and resident beamline personnel appearing in the Director of the AES' list of personnel having the authority to authorize experiments.

Hazard Control Verification

The Director of the APS Engineering Support Division delegates responsibility for verifying that required controls are in place to the experiment On-site Spokesperson, Beamline Management personnel having experiment safety responsibilities, and ANL Designated Electrical Equipment Inspectors.
