Operations Update/Announcements, Mark Beno

Beno informed the group that there was only one trip this week. It occurred on August 5 th, lasted for 0.4 hours, and was caused by an RF problem.

Beno also announced that the APS Upgrade Summary Workshop is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, August 10-11, 2006. For additional information, there is a link on the APS home page and on the conferences and workshops web page. The workshop will be held in the 402 Conference Center, and it is open to everyone.

Safety, Tom Barkalow

Barkalow reported that there was another Beryllium vacuum window break at 30-ID-B. There was very little dispersion of small particles, and it was an easy clean up. Future discussions will focus on how the APS is going to deal with these types of breaks in the future. These windows are commercial products from Electrofusion, and it is felt that it should be their responsibility to assure that the thickness of the product is sufficient enough to preclude these breaks. This is definitely not an age-related incident.

Barkalow also informed the group that ANL will be doing an internal assessment of analytical x-ray machines at ANL. Jim Lang will be conducting this review for APS.

A question was asked about an incident in the 438 gas cylinder storage area and whether there was improper storage. Cindy Chaffee and Edmund Chang will look further into this situation.

AES Cryocooler Maintenance -- John Quintana

Quintana announced that if users want the cryocooler maintenance to continue during the upcoming shut-down to contact Bob Dorgwegt at dortwegt@aps.anl.gov .

Quintana also informed the group that the APS will be loosing storage space in Buildings 369 and 378. He asked all sectors take a look at what they have stored in other buildings and to get rid of things they don't need or no longer use. This clean-up must be completed by October 1, 2006.

Additional comments

A question was raised as to whether there will be a water shut-down during the next beam shut-down period. This will be looked into and answered at the next meeting.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, August 14, 2006.
