CAT Chat Minutes

February 14, 2005

Announcements and Follow-up
Bike Storage – Several cabinets by the double gray doors will be moved in the near future to make room for bicycle parking so that the doors, nearby fire extinguishers, and fire alarms are not blocked.   (Jeff Alicz)

Mail to Sectors – Due to union issues it is not possible for the parcel delivery person to deliver mail, although they are all PFS employees.   Steve Downey can provide more input at the next CAT chat on Feb 21 st.

User reported that Users from ORNL are having trouble calling APS - There have been PBX outages as mentioned in a few broadcast email messages.   Argonne is currently in the process of replacing the PBX that covers the APS.   The new system will fix any of the recent call problems.   One benefit from the new system will be Caller ID for outside calls.   Currently the display reads “outside”.   The downside is that there will be an additional $2.20 line charge. Regarding electrical safety, user is being told he may not work over a certain voltage.   If the manager signs off, is it okay to perform electrical work?   Also, what if a user runs his experiment off European voltage?

Kevin explained that current APS experiment authorization forms will be updated with additional words about electrical safety. A transformer for conversion to 220V is okay so long as it is commercial electrical equipment, as in this case. However AOD will inspect of this particular unit.

Safety
Jeff Alicz, XFD Safety, reported:
1)  A tour of the APS will be given to the DOE Office of Assessment ES&H review team the afternoon of February 23, 2005.    Murray Gibson asked that the CATs look at the housekeeping within their area(s) prior to this tour.
2)  Several cabinets by the double gray doors will be moved in the near future to make room for bicycle parking so that the doors, nearby fire extinguishers, and fire alarms are not blocked.
3)  GSE-CARS and HP-CAT received their three-year sector safety reviews last week.  All went well and BESSRC is scheduled for its review on Thursday afternoon.
