CAT Chat Minutes

Information and Follow-up Items
1. One day last week, we lost undulator control. Can you explain what happened?
Since your user name was not included in the access security system, it could not control the undulator. At your request, the user name requirement has been removed. Just to remind everyone, CATs have the option of using either user name and/or computer name.
2. Would it be possible to provide a rough vacuum manifold for all the beamlines?
Many beamlines already have their own rough pumpdown systems. The cost to provide a common manifold to all of the beamlines would be substantial and is not currently in any future plans.
3. What is the progress for construction of the 436 LOM?
We are going through the final engineering reviews before going out for bids. If everything goes on schedule, the construction should start in late summer.
The storage ring availability has been good. During the past week, five faults occurred related primarily to rf trips. Thus far, the availability for the run is over 95%, however the mean time between faults is only 22 hours.
A 48-hour machine studies period will take place on the 19th of June at 8:00 am. Shielding verification will occur for 34-ID-A starting that Monday at 1200 hours and ending at 1800 hours. The first special operating mode (SOM1) is scheduled to begin on June 27. This will be the week of top-up operation. SOM2 will follow starting on July 3. This will be the hybrid (asymmetric) fill pattern.
A process variable related to the operation of the Elliptical Multipole Wiggler (EMS) will be provided next week.
We ask for user cooperation in not using the washrooms while they are being cleaned. The chemicals used to clean the washroom surfaces are caustic and could lead to injury.
The APS Spectrum picnic will be held on Friday, June 23 at the Argonne Park. The picnic is for all APS employees including the users. This day of fun will begin at 5:00 pm. If you need any further information, don't hesitate to contact the User office (x-9250).
