Bill Foster
Bill Foster is the son of an "outside agitator" active in the early
civil rights movement. He received his PhD from Harvard
in 1983 on the design and construction if the IMB detector, the first
large water Cherenkov detector built for proton decay.
During his career in high-energy physics he worked on the construction
of the CDF tracking chamber, built high speed
digital tracking triggers at CDF, designed calorimeters and integrated
circuits for calorimeter readout at the SSC, was the
project manager for the 8 GeV transfer line between the Booster and
Main Injector, designed and managed the construction
of the permanent magnets for the Recycler ring, led the successful
development of low-cost superconducting magnets for
the VLHC, and built high speed bunch-by-bunch digital beam dampers
for Fermilab's Run II. Before entering High-
Energy physics, he was the founder and CEO of Electronic Theatre Controls,
Inc. the world's largest manufacturer of stage
lighting equipment.
