Alignment of the LHC experimental insertions.
The achievement of the highest performance of the LHC is strongly dependent on the alignment of the quadrupoles and of the protection elements in the experimental insertions. This note reviews the alignment tolerances resulting from optical and aperture considerations. The requirements are in the sub-millimeter scale along the straight sections on both sides of the experimental areas. This calls for the development of very accurate techniques and the possibility of beam based alignment is discussed here.
