Beamline 23-ID-D: Sector 23 - Insertion Device Beamline D

GM/CA-CAT
Life Sciences

Description

Sector 23 utilizes canted undulators to provide two independent sources for the two ID-beamlines 23-ID-B (U33) and 23-ID-D (U30). The beamlines support macromolecular crystallography, MAD/SAD phasing, virus crystallography, and microcrystals. The beamlines are equipped with on-axis-microscopes allowing parallax free alignment. Our quad-mini-beam collimators (Fischetti, et.al. JSR 16, 217-225) provide either a 5, 10 or 20 micron beam or a scatter guard for the 70x25 micron^2 beam with intensities of 2.4e11, 6.2e11, 2.4e12 and 1.3e13 photons/sec, respectively. The sample goniometer has a ~1 micron (peak-to-peak) sphere-of-confusion. The mini-beam capability has been coupled with powerful user friendly software (JBluIce-EPICS) providing the ability to raster scan the diffractive or fluorescence properties of a sample to locate micro-crystals or map the properties of larger crystals. Users can also mitigate the effects of radiation damage by defining a 3-dimensional vector along which partial data sets can automatically be collected. An ALS-style sample automounter (BAM-1) provides high throughput sample screening. The automounter accommodates ALS-Hampton pins in ALS, Unipuck, or Rigagu pucks.

Supported Techniques

  • Macromolecular crystallography
  • Microbeam
  • Large unit cell crystallography
  • Subatomic (<0.85 Å) resolution
  • Multi-wavelength anomalous dispersion
  • Single-wavelength anomalous dispersion

Beamline Controls and Data Acquisition

The GM/CA JBluIce-EPICS user friendly interface retains the look of the original SSRL BluIce, but has been completely rewritten in JAVA at GM/CA to run on EPICS, VME EPICS/MEDM low level interface, PMAC Turbo motion control, and Linux workstations for data collection and processing (Stepanov, et.al. Acta. Cryst. D. 67, 176-188). The JBluIce-EPICS software is an open source available for downloading from GM/CA-CAT files depository.
