- April 26, 2003: The
example files and scripts for elegant
have been updated. M. Yoon (SLAC) pointed out that many of the
examples described in the manual were missing. Some of these have
been restored. Look in the "PAR" subdirectory.
- April 26, 2003: Version 3.0 of spiffe was released. It
contains a number of bug fixes to version 2.4. Users should upgrade
to the new version.
- April 17, 2003: A bug was discovered in elegant's RFCW element by Paul Emma. If you
are using a version downloaded between December 2002 and April 16, 2003, you should
download an updated copy.
- April 9, 2002: The Beam Parameters for varous running conditions is now online.
- April 5, 2002: An update on progress on storage-ring R&D is available
on-line
(APS only).
- November 21, 2001: A
web page collecting information about SDDS and its applications is now
available. If you are just getting interested in SDDS or elegant, this is
a good place to start.
- October 17, 2001: Version 14.5 of elegant has been released. The
new version features an improved model for CSR in drift spaces and other
improvements. See the
manual
for more information. Consult the
installation guides
to install the new version.
- From September 12-18, 2001, low-emittance and top-up modes
were combined for the first time for a user beam run. A current of
102mA in 23 bunches was maintained by topping up every 2 minutes. The
lifetime was 7.4 hours with horizontal and vertical emittances of 3nm
and 0.06nm, respectively.
- A tutorial
introduction to SDDS is now available. It includes data files
that you can download to work along with progressive examples. The
section on sddsplot should be particularly helpful.
- An invited
talk
was given at FEL2001 on start-to-end simulations. It includes a discussion
of the methods as well as comprehensive jitter simulations for the LCLS.
An example of the CSR microbunching instability predicted by elegant is
also given.
- elegant example files updated:The
example files and scripts for elegant
have been updated. A few problems were fixed and some enhancements made.

- elegant 14.4 available:
Version 14.4
of elegant is available. The new version has numerous bug fixes, an improved
model for CSR in drift spaces, body focusing in rf cavities, and more. For
details, see the
change notes.
- SDDS 1.20 available:
Version 1.20
of the SDDS Toolkit is available. There are several exciting new features:
1. The Windows version no longer requires the EXCEED X-Windows emulator.
2. There is an extension for the Python script language.
3. Several new programs were added: sddsbaseline, sddscliptails, and sddsgenericfit.
4. Programs that hitherto required entry of RPN-style equations will now also
take algebraic equations.
- SDDS/EPICS Demonstration Scripts Available: A set of Tcl/Tk
scripts is available now for running demonstrations of data
collection, analysis, and control using SDDS and EPICS. The
demonstration involves a simulation of the orbit in a storage ring
using the portable channel access server. This is a great way to
learn to use SDDS in the EPICS context. See SDDS/EPICS
Demonstration Scripts on the Operations & Analysis group's software download page for more
information.
- Bunch compressor helps LEUTL FEL saturate: With the help of the
bunch compressor to increase the peak current, the APS LEUTL Free Electron
Laser achieved saturation at 530 nm, a world record for shortest
wavelength. We extend our congratulations to the entire
LEUTL team.
- In late July, 2000, we began commissioning of the new bunch compressor in the APS linac. The system
performed very well and compression factors of 4-6 are now routinely achieved.

- Starting on June 27, 2000, APS ran in top-up mode
for users for six days. Injection occured at about 2 minute intervals
for six days, maintaining stored beam of about 102mA almost
continuously. This is a first for a synchrotron light source and
shows that top-up mode is practical. See the current history during
