August 21, 2002 TO: APS Employees FROM: J.M. Gibson SUBJECT: Task Force to help APS respond to the Report on the Climate for Women in Physics at Argonne National Laboratory The report produced by a team from the American Physical Society that visited Argonne in January 2002 raised a number of serious issues about the working environment at Argonne http://www.anl.gov/OPA/argonnet/apsreanl.pdf. Although the original report focused on women physicists at the lab, many of the issues identified are relevant to the working climate for all APS employees. I am deeply committed to improving this climate, and especially to removing any barriers that impede under-represented groups. To that end, I have appointed a task force to recommend actions we might take to improve the climate for women at APS. Liz Moog (XFD) has agreed to lead this important task force along with the following members: Judi Yaeger (XFD), Kelly Jaje (ASD), Susan Strasser (AOD), Trudy Bolin (XFD), and Mark Erdmann (XFD). Please contact them if you have specific suggestions or concerns. I am asking the task force to give me their initial recommendations by October 30.
