Functional Description of APS Front Ends

page 5

Insertion Device Beam Line
Fixed Mask Assembly

This is the first Front End component to interact with the beam. The fixed mask (FM) may be exposed to the full beam or part of the beam and thus requires careful design analysis. A similar mask is located further downstream on the front end. Both of these assemblies are designed to absorb the full beam of any ID at the APS planned for the first phase. Noteworthy to operations is the Equipment Protection System (EPS) fault signal that monitors cooling water flow to the device. A no-flow or underflow condition of this device will cause the beam to be intentionally dumped by the Front-End Equipment Protection System (FEEPS)! This occurrence surely will be brought to the attention of the FC.
