Functional Description of APS Front Ends

Insertion Device Beam Line
Filters

The Front End filters, if and when used, are designed to protect a beamline exit window thermally and structurally. These windows, typically made of Beryllium, act as a physical vacuum barrier between the Front End and the User beamline. Filters are typically pyrolitic graphite foils which absorb and dissipate heat from unwanted portions of the photon beam spectra. The filter is not used for windowless beamlines .

There are no alarm signals associated with the filter system.
