AWA – Argonne Wakefield Accelerator Facility (operation: 1987- ongoing)

The early ANL wakefield tests were made using the AATF (Advanced Accelerator Test Facility).  The AATF showed the feasibility of collinear wakefield acceleration experiments using a witness beam, and achieved a 5 nC drive beam.  It  enabled the first observation of plasma wakefield acceleration.  Then the AWA was built.  It has achieved a 100nC, 3 mm long drive beam, using an L band RF photoinjector. Several pioneering experiments on wakefield acceleration have been carried out using the AWA, including the use of dielectric accelerating structures.
